Briano and Cory received a call today from some boating enthusiasts in the Pumicestone Passage about a small Green Sea Turtle bobbing around in the water, it was still able to swim quite well, but unable to stay submerged for a longer period of time!
The team drove the ‘Black Pearl’ straight out to the boat ramp and headed out! Luckily, the family that had called in the sick turtle had stayed with it, keeping their eyes on the turtle at all times!
As the ‘Black Pearl’ approached the turtle, it took a few dives down, but luckily Cory was able to dive out of the boat and catch the turtle! The team brought it on board and took it back to the Australian Wildlife Hospital for treatment.
Amazingly, we can tell from the carapace (shell) of this turtle that it is a new recruit to coastal waters! Sea Turtles spend the first 10 – 15 years of their lives in the Pacific Ocean and Coral Sea – we can tell that it is a new recruit because of the ridging on the underbelly and also the sharp edges on the carapace! ‘Ryan’ the Sea Turtle is in great condition and we hold high hopes for a full recovery!!
