Steve Irwin Day Blog

We want to know how YOU are going to Khaki it this Steve Irwin Day, 15 November 2009 to help make a difference for wildlife conservation?

Khaki is more than a colour. It’s an attitude. It’s a stand to do something positive in our world and a passion to make a difference. And when you make a difference – you KHAKI IT!

Khaki is a symbol of Steve Irwin, the original Crocodile Hunter and Wildlife Warrior. At Australia Zoo and Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors – we continue the legacy of Conservation, Family and Fun that Stevo created – and every day – we KHAKI IT!

When you see that khaki uniform, it is a sign that somebody is there to get in and get their hands dirty and save an animal or campaign for wildlife conservation. But you don’t have to be Terri, Bindi or Robert Irwin or a member of the Zoo Crew to be a Wildlife Warrior. Anyone can make a difference. Anyone can KHAKI IT!

Blog here how you KHAKI IT! Have you saved an animal, picked up rubbish, planted trees, fundraised or spread Steve’s message about conservation?

Your blogs can include text, images, links or even short videos and don’t forget to comment on blogs from your fellow conservationists!

BUT being a Wildlife Warrior is not  only about raising money for conservation and wildlife it is also about  teaching people that we CAN live along side our wildlife,It’s trying to get people to do the right thing example throw your rubbish in a bin not on the ground. Recycle and reuse, Don’t use plastic bags as they are killing off our wildlife and polluting our land and waterways. please don’t use straws as they end up in our water ways and they ahve been known to kill wildlife by getting syuck in their throats and stomach.
Education: Working with people here in Australia and around the world so they can understand that we can live along side with wildlife and we do not need to fearful of them . Wildlife Warriors work together with FFI in Cambodia they have shown the Cambodians a way to keep elephants away from their crops, They have planted Chilli around their crops because elephants do not like chilli therefore stay away from the crops they have planted to earn money from.
Never ever buy products that come from endangered species, like tigers teeth, elephant tusks,Fur rugs,Fur coats you would be horrified to find out just how many pelts it takes to make one fur coat. WE humans have the wonderful opportunity to make clothing items from many types of material we do NOT need to wear real animal fur,the animals need it we don’t.
ANWSER THE CALL:
I am collecting mobile phones,Old ones unwanted ones any type you don’t want. These are NOT for me. As you know I AM aWildlife Warrior and right now I am on a mission to help save Gorillas in Africa.
Habitat destruction and poaching are just two of the factors driving this greatape to extinction. Coltan is a rare mineral that is used in the production ofelectronic devices, including mobile phones. Unfortunately, most of the world’s coltan reserves are found in the same region as gorillas and the mining for thisrare mineral is destroying their last remaining habitat.By recycling your old mobile phones, not only are you reducing the demand for coltan but also helping to raise funds for Gorilla conservation.
If you live in Melbourne shoot me an email and I can either pick up your old phone/phones or send you the bag you need to send your phone in .If your near Auztralia Zoo  go there for a visit and collect a bag to send your phone/phones in.While your there grab a few extra and hand them out to family and friends. The more phones we can collect the better for the sake of the gorillas. Or you can even go online and print out some labels to send your phone/phones off.
It is trying our best to stop actions that we know are wrong therefore I am asking you all the petitions below if you have not all ready. If you can also please forward the URLs to everyone you know we have to do the right thing.

Trevor, Steve would be proud to know…

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 by FloridaFishFinder

After all these years, I want to tell you all how profoundly Steve influenced my son, Trevor. We have always love animals and have a small reptilian collection of our own. My son, Trevor grew up watching Steve’s adventures on Animal Planet and fully intended to study under him, journeying to the Australian Zoo after graduation. He cried for weeks after Steve passed away, but is now happy knowing that the zoo and Steve’s message will survive. This young man, Trevor, living in Southwest Florida caught and cared for snakes, turtles, alligators, and other reptiles nearly every day. Before, he gets too old I want to share this with you as a furthering tribute to Steve Irwin:

When he was 12, Trevor was fishing at one of the local fresh water lakes when he saw an alligator lying on the bank. The ‘gator looked decimated, dried out, and nearly dead. He went to it and helped it into the water, but the ‘gator thrashed, rolled, and did not act right. Trevor pulled him back on shore. A homeowner came out and told Trevor the ‘gator showed up about three days before and hadn’t moved from the bank. Trevor instinctively knew it would die, so he ran home, tied his wagon to his bike, dumped out toys from a rubbermaid tub and returned to save the ‘gator. Upon getting the alligator home, Trevor called a group called C.R.O.W. (Care and Rehabilitation of Wildlife) located on Sanibel Island, Fl. As members of the SW Florida Herpetological Society, we knew they help distressed indigenous species. CROW came and collected the alligator. Trevor gave them all the information he could and they saved the alligator’s life. They determined the alligator sustained permanent neurological damage likely from being struck by an automobile. Although the animal could never survive in the wild with the injuries he has, CROW donated him to a local alligator zoo where he will be cared for and make baby ‘gators for the rest of his life. Attached is a picture of Trevor with his ‘gator.

Fundraiser for Wildlife Warriors and Turtle Tracks

Sunday, January 25th, 2009 by Snakesteve

Hello Warriors,

After Steve died I wanted to do something in his memory and to raise money for Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.  I designed a memorial coin called the Crikey Fundraiser Geocoin–

The Crikey Fundraiser Geocoin

The Crikey Fundraiser Geocoin

The coin sold out last September and raised over $3000 USD which was that was then donated to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.  There are now close to 1000 Crikey coins traveling all over the earth via folks known as Geocachers.  Geocaching is a family oriented international outdoor scavenger hunt that uses GPS devices to find hidden “caches” in remote and unique locations.  Geocoins travel between geocaches in the hands of Geocachers–those who hunt for geocaches.  Steve Irwin’s wildlife conservation message is still being carried all over the world in this simple coin–this memorial to a great man who left us way to soon.

I am thinking about doing another minting of the Crikey coin to raise more funds for the Wildlife Warriors wildlife conservation cause and to get more of the Crikey coin out there in circulation–thereby continuing to spread Steve Irwin’s conservation message to the world. I am wondering if anyone out there would be interested in the coin if I do another run?  To show your interest you can take a look at the coin’s website linked below and take the poll near the top of the page.  If the poll doesn’t work or you would rather leave a message here please do so–thank you.

Check out the Crikey Coin’s homepage at this link: http://www.geocities.com/thesolorover/crikeycoin.html

I have also designed another coin that’s sole purpose is to raise money for my own conservation work with Eastern Box Turtles and it is called the Turtle Tracks Fundraiser Coin.

The Turtle Tracks Fundraiser Geocoin

The Turtle Tracks Fundraiser Geocoin

This coin, like the Crikey Fundraiser Geocoin before it, is being produced by my friends at http://www.coinsandpins.com  who are great supporters of wildlife conservation.  It is now for sale until Saturday January 24, 2009. This will be the primary fundraiser for my conservation project for 2009. I hope that some of you might be interested in helping out the project by purchasing this new collectible coin. This coin is reptile-themed with an Eastern Box Turtle on one side and an Eastern Diamondback Rattler (my other favorite reptile) on the other–and the coin rattles like a rattlesnake!! You can buy the new coin now through this link: http://www.coinsandpins.com/index.php?cPath=25_55

Get one fast because they will only be up for sale for a few days! All proceeds–after production costs–will help provide funds for my donation-funded Turtle Tracks Eastern Box Turtle rehabilitation and conservation project here:  http://www.geocities.com/thesolorover/Boxtrack.html

Check out the coin on its website here:  http://www.geocities.com/thesolorover/turtletrackscoin.html

Please send this note to all of your friends or to anyone else that you think may be interested in helping us help raise funds for Wildlife Warriors and for the turtles. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Cheers, Steveo

My Steve

Sunday, January 25th, 2009 by Kate

Hey everyone.

I’ve just finished reading My Steve and it was such a great book. I found out so much more stuff about Steve, Terri, Bindi and Robert. The book brought a tear to my eyes because of what an amazing man he was.

I remember going to Australia Zoo when I was 8 or 9 and at the time Steve was my favourite, well not celebrity but you know what I mean. I LOVED watching crocodile hunter and I was fascinated at how he picked up like EVERY animal he came apon and hardly ever got bitten. So when we went to Australia Zoo I was also a big fan of Bindi aswell I thought she was soooo lucky to live on a zoo but anyway.. everytime I went around a corner I would hold my breath hoping that Bindi, Terri or Steve would be there (Robert was just a little baby I think). But after a while I got sick of looking for the Irwin’s and got swept up with the wildlife. My favourite were the kangaroo’s they’re soo cute and I live in New Zealand so obviously we don’t have them here. I think everyone at Australia Zoo are great and ecspecially Terri, Bindi and Robert who coped so well through the tough times and I’m so happy that they’ve carried on with his dreams. I so wish I could contribute to Australia Zoo but I’m 13, live in New Zealand, and have no money (so I can’t even adopt an animal =’[) it’s quite frustrating.

I would also like to say CONGRATULATIONS to Terri because when I was younger Steve was my favourite ‘Celebrity’ (like I said) but when he died.. I cried and I got upset.. I watched the Terri Irwin interviews..Cried some more, but I was only 11 and I kind of moved onto a new Celebrity and well not forgot about him (I knew who he was obviously) and I would still watch Crocodile Hunter but yeah and then when I read My Steve I cried and I’ve been on You Tube watching video’s of him and I remember what a great man he was. I used to be scared of spiders like daddy long legs but now I’m not. I know they can’t hurt me and all other animals aren’t scary to me anymore it’s like a switch in my brain has gone from scared to interested. I even picked up a spider last night. And I’ve been looking at pictures of aligators and they arent ugly like I always thought, they are actually really cute! I want to be just like Steve when I grow up.
